Tiruchirapalli, Mar 24: The Tiruchi Chapter of Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) has appealed to the Drug Technical Advisory Board to ban certain fixed dose combination drugs for cough.

In a statement here yesterday, IAP Tiruchi Chapter President Sunil Srinivasan said a resolution to this effect was adopted at its meeting here on Friday.

The meeting also appealed to the government to appoint a committee comprising pulmonologists and pharmacologists to assess and ban drugs with hazardous combinations.

It urged the public to refrain from administering drugs for cough without the prescription from doctors.

He said cough was only a protective reflex and mild cough in children was normal.

Continuous and excessive usage of cough drugs not prescribed by doctors could lead to dizziness in children and combination drugs would worsen the condition with extreme side effects.
