Wellington, Mar.24 : The listing of a vintage British World War II aircraft on the Trade Me website by an Auckland family has generated global interest, even from Germany.

he Subritzky family, of Auckland's North Shore, listed their Spitfire with the online auction site for an unspecified price.

The Vickers Supermarine single-seat Spitfire is one of fewer than 50 left in the world, reports stuff.co.nz.

Mike Subritzky told the New Zealand Herald having the Spitfire was a privilege, with its history making it the best aircraft the family had owned.

"It's a time capsule. It's been around since 1944 and it's special because it's not a replica."

Although the Subritzkys have not put an asking price on the aircraft, Spitfires in good condition can be worth up to five million dollars, the newspaper reported.

The Spitfire has been regarded as one of the most famous fighter planes in history and its sale has generated keen interest here and overseas.

The online auction was due to close on Friday March 28. So far there have been no bids for the aircraft.
