NRI cheated by woman in Orissa

Kendrapara, Mar 24: In an internet-related crime, an NRI working in Dubai was allegedly duped of Rs 13 lakh by a woman here.

One Jitendra Kumar Nayak, hailing from Ainipara village of the district, developed friendship with Kaveri Patra, a resident of Nasipur village, through internet.

The woman, owner of ''Persona Consultancy service', a Bhubaneswar-based software company, came to know about Mr Nayak thrugh a matrimonial site and sent him a proposal in June 2007 in this regard, the victim said in the FIR lodged in the Pattamundai police station.

Mr Nayak said Kaveri used to ask him for money for one or the other reason. On September 21 last year, the woman sent him an e-mail requesting him to give her Rs 13 lakh as loan and transfer the money through on-line Western Union money transfer or through core banking facilities.

She promised to repay the loan along with interest within three months, Mr Nayak added.

The NRI took a bank loan and arranged the amount to help her. But after getting the money, Kaveri stopped calling him and when contacted, denied to have received the money.

Later, he found that the woman had married her business partner in January.

Mr Nayak brought the matter recently before the police and asked the DGP, the State Crime Branch and the Orissa Chief minister to intervene in the matter and help him recover the money.

Pattmaundai police station OIC, K Mallick said a case had been registered and investigtion was on.
