MPA assures clean and efficient governance: Sidhu

Shillong, Mar 24 (UNI) Meghalaya Governor S S Sidhu today informed the Assembly that the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance(MPA) government has assured to provide a clean and efficient governance.

The coalition government has decided to accord top priority to development of power, agriculture, roads, tourism, social sectors, poverty alleviation and employment generation.

The MPA government, which took over the reigns from the Congress, last week, promised to provide clean governance keeping in view the people's interest.

In his traditional address to the newly elected law-makers of the state, the governor said the Planning Commission has projected a Plan size of Rs 9185.00 crore for Meghalaya during the 11th Plan.

As against the nine per cent projected growth rate for the country, target for the state has been fixed at 7.3 per cent during the Plan period, Mr Sidhu told the House.

He, however, said the state needs to accelerate its developmental and economic efforts so that it can grow at a faster rate than envisaged.

''This calls for more focused and well directed investment and employment promotion policies coupled with better implementation, grass-root level participation in plans and programmes,'' Mr Sidhu opined.

He said the government will take all necessary steps to ensure peace and stability in the state, and all sections of the people are to carry out their legitimate economic activities.

Informing the House that the government will also stress for human development through extensive health care, provisions of educational avenues, the governor said the intra and inter-regional disparity in infrastructure and human development index across districts and communities within the state would closely analysed and resolved.

Underscoring the need for better roads and communications for landlocked state like Meghalaya, the governor said, the MPA attached the highest priority to improving and upgrading the state's road network.

''Four laning of Jorabat-Umiam portion under National Highway Authority of India on Build Operate and Transfer cum annuity has been approved and will be posed for a competitive bid soon,'' he added.
