Sugarcane growers stage demo

Puducherry, Mar 23 (UNI) The sugarcane growers, supplying sugarcane to the Lingareddippalayam Cooperative Sugar Mills here, today staged a demonstration in front of the mill to protest against the management's alleged failure to pay the growers for the sugarcane supplied to them.

The agitators locked up the main gate of the mill and laid siege to sugar-laden lorries.

Legislator Arulmurugan, who rushed to the spot, held talks with the agitators and assured them that an amicable solution would be found in a couple of days after discussions with Chief Minister N Rangasamy.

The agitation was dropped following the assurance.

Meanwhile, the Puducherry unit of the CPI staged a demonstration at the Nehru street here demanding the immediate withdrawal of the milk price hike.
