Undertrial escapes from Karnataka prison

Shimoga, Mar 22 (UNI) An undertrial arrested on charges of committing house thefts escaped from the district prison premises here today.

Police said the undertrial was identified as Lawrance alias Dalmia Lawrance.

The undertrial escaped after a group of six inmates in prison were asked to work in a coconut groove in the jail premises and it suddenly started raining heavily. The prison staff on guard rushed for cover towards the pump house, while the undertrial escaped.

Efforts were on to trace the culprit, police added.

This was the third such incident that had taken place in the prison during the last three months.

Earlier, undertrials Basavaraj, Ravi and Ramesh had escaped by hoodwinking the guards.
