Barreto arrested with escess dollars; released on bail
Kolkata, Mar 20 (UNI) Mohun Bagan's Brazilian striker Jose Ramirez Barreto was today arrested and released on interim bail after being produced before the Barasat Sub-divisional Court by the Customs at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Dum Dum.
Barreto was detained as he was travelling with 20,500 dollars without proper documents required for carrying foreign currency.
He was arrested under 104 Customs Act for possessing foreign exchange in excess of what is legally allowed.
Defence counsel Tarak Mukherjee pleaded innocence on part of the player and he was granted bail on a security of Rs 10,000.
His passport was seized by the Customs and he would not be allowed to leave India, before the matter was settled.
The next date of hearing is fixed by the district court on April three for the final bail hearing.
Mohun Bagan General Secretary Anjan Mitra told UNI, ''Barreto was travelling with three members of his family to Mauritius when it occurred.'' Barreto is considered to be the most celebrated soccer star for Mohun Bagan in the modern time. He and Baichung Bhutia form the dream strike force for the green-maroons.
