CLMC seeks India's intervention to stop Sarabjit's execution

Hyderabad, Mar 19 (UNI) The Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee here today urged the Indian Government to take all possible measures to protect the life of Sarabjit Singh, awarded death sentence by Pakistan.

Expressing concern over Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf rejecting the mercy petition of Sarabjit, convicted for his involvement in multiple bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan in 1991, CLMC General Secretary Lateef Mohd Khan, in a statement here, said ''the time has come to abolish death penalty worldwide.'' The case for abolition of capital punishment had become more compelling with each passing year. Everywhere, experiences show that executions brutalised those involved in the process. Nowhere had it been shown that death penalty had led to a decrease in crime or political violence, he argued.
