AP Assembly adopts resolution on protecting tiger

Hyderabad, Mar 19 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Assembly today adopted a unanimous resolution on tiger protection, thanking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and appreciating the NDTV channel for taking up ''save the tiger'' campaign.

The resolution also appreciated the efforts of NGOs like Kids-for-Tiger WWF-India and Nallamala foundation for spreading awareness in society to protect the tiger.

Moving the resolution, Environment Minister S Vijayaramaraju observed that in the last few decades, there had been an awakening at local and global levels to protect nature and restore bio-diversity. There had been a special concern for the tiger as it was on the verge of extinction, he added.

''In Andhra Pradesh, we have earmarked the largest area in the country, Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, for conservation of tiger,'' he noted, adding, ''we all need to work together to save the tiger and, thereby the entire forest eco-system.'' Cutting across party lines, members stressed the need for conserving the endangered species.
