Mumbai, Mar 18: The state government will take strict action against fishermen who are found fishing without valid licences in Raigad, Ratnagiri and other nearby areas, Animal Husbandry Minister Anees Ahmed said in the Legislative Council today.

Replying to a query from the Opposition, Mr Ahmed said, ''The government is trying to stop the illegal fishing. Strict action will be taken against illegal fishing and a third-time offender will suffer a year's jail term.'' BJP member Madhu Chavan said local fishermen were suffering due to illegal fishing. Foreign ships were involved in illegal fishing, he said.
