Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Kolhapur

Kolhapur, Mar 18: A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide at Akurde village in Bhudargad tehsil of the district here.

Shukracharya Shamrao Bhandigare (37) committed suicide yesterday by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house, police said here today. Shukracharya had taken a loan of about Rs nine lakh from local credit societies and other financial institutions and had repaid half the amount by selling his land recently, police said.

Police have recovered a suicide note. Shukracharya mentioned in the note that he was ending his life since he regretted his decision to sell off his land, more so since the government had now announced a loan waiver.
