Tusker tramples woman in Chhattisgarh

Pathalgaon, Chhattisgarh, Mar 16 (UNI) A tribal woman was trampled by a wild elephant that first grabbed her with its trunk in Jashpur district's Kendapani forest today, police said.

Tuskers are causing havoc in this area. The deceased was identified as Puneebai who gone to collect 'mahua'. Three members of her family ran to safety. Forests Department sources said that a herd of pachyderms destroyed half-a-dozen villagers' houses at villages in Manora and Bagicha areas two days back.

About 100 elephants in four herds are said to be present in Jashpur Forest Division and an attempt is underway to drive them into neighbouring Jharkhand. Maximum havoc is being caused in villages adjoining Bagicha, Tapkara and Kunkuri areas. Crops are being ruined near Badalkhol Sanctuary.

''Tuskers are are causing havoc in more than 50 villages in three blocks of Jashpur district,'' said former parliamentarian Pushpadevi Singh.
