Fresh violence leaves two injured at Nandigram

Nandigram, Mar 15 (UNI) A day after the first remembrance anniversary of Nandigram killings, a village in the area today witnessed a fresh violence with clashes between the supporters of the Bhumi Uchhed Protirodh Committee and CPI(M) over an election of a school committee at Hazrakata, police said.

The BUPC supporters while protesting against alleged threatening of guardians' voters of the school at Rajaramchak village attacked the CPI(M) activists early this morning, claimed a party supporter, which was quickly denied by the BPUC.

The CPI(M), however, claimed that its supporters were peacefully moving from house to house urging the electors to vote in favour of their candidates.

In the clashes two CPI(M) activists were injured and admitted to Nandigram hospital. The condition of one Shaikh Asad was stated to be critical.

Superintendent of Police, East Midnapur district, S. S. Panda said that a police picket has been posted in the area and situation was under control.

The opposition parties and many intellectuals and celebrities in Bengal yesterday took part in protests against the police firing a year ago at Nandigram in which fourteen people were killed and many injured.
