Gufran Azam to campaign against Gill

Bhopal, Mar 14 (UNI) Former Indian Hockey Federation head and Congress leader Gufran Azam today said that he would continue his campaign against IHF President K P S Gill in the wake of the national team not qualifying for the Olympics, which is an unprecedented failure.

Holding Mr Gill responsible for the shameful defeat, Mr Azam told reporters here that he had written to the Prime Minister and the Sports Minister in this regard. However, no action was taken.

Critcising the dictatorial attitude of the IHF President, Mr Azam said he and some other hockey experts would meet United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi soon to discuss the matter. He was leaving for New Delhi tomorrow.

''Mr Gill is bent on destroying Indian hockey completely. The Centre must take necessary steps to improve the condition of hockey.

It was essential to remove Mr Gill from the post,'' Mr Azam said.

He said he had written a letter to the Prime Minister demanding removing Mr Gill on March 12 and January 25, 2005.

He added that the glory of hockey could return if a hockey expert was appointed in place of Mr Gill.
