Panaji, Mar 13 (UNI) In a major breakthrough, Goa Police have today arrested a young drug peddler Placido Carvalho, who had allegedly heavily drugged British teenager Scarlette that led to her mysterious death on February 18 at the Anjuna beach in north Goa.
''Carvalho is a drug pusher, peddler and consumer who had in connivance with Samson, drugged the girl with a cocktail of narcotic substances besides alcoholic drinks sufficient enough to cause her death,'' Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kishan Kumar said, addressing a press conference at the police headquarters this evening.
Claming that the police had cracked the mystery behind the alleged rape and murder of the girl, he said the police was also looking into the drug cartel aspect.
Carvalho, who was produced before a court this afternoon, was remanded to 14 days of police custody to facilitate further investigation of the case which the IGP said, was ''just the beginning, not the end in itself''.
Carvalho was accused of administering intoxicating or unwholesome drug to cause hurt (section 328 of the IPC) and common intention to kill a person (section 34 of IPC).
On the otherhand, Samson, who was also under police remand for 14 days, was accused of murder, rape, serving drugs and common intention to cause death, he added.
Meanwhile, the administration had suspended Station House officer of Anjuna police station Nelson Albuquerque for ''lapses'' in investigation of the case, which drew global media attention.
The press conference was attended among others, by representatives of several foreign media channels including the BBC and CNN.
