Mah govt admits 584 farmers suicides in three months
Mumbai, Mar 13 (UNI) Maharashtra Revenue Minister Narayan Rane today admitted that 584 farmers have committed suicide from November 1 to February 15, 2008.
Replying to a question by Ranjitsingh Mohite Patil (NCP) and others, Mr Rane said that out of this, in 162 cases, the families of the deceased farmers were found to be eligible for compensation.
He said, the remaining 422 cases were not found eligible.
Jagdish Gupta (BJP) questioned about the norms and said mere debt should not be the norm and added that even if any member of the farmer's family commits suicide; still the compensation should be given.
