Assembly resolution on national holiday on Guru's martyrdom day
Chandigarh, Mar 13 (UNI) The Punjab assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution calling for declaring the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur a national holiday.
The non official resolution adopted by the Vidhan Sabha recommended to the state government to take up the matter with the central government for declaring the Guru's martyrdom day as a national holiday, keeping in view his '' unique and great sacrifice''.
The resolution was moved by Virsa Singh Valtoha, Capt Balbor Singh Baath, Dalbir Singh and Sarabjit Singh, all of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The members recalled the sacrifice of the Guru in opposing the repressive rule of Moghul emperor Aurangzeb.
Both ruling alliance members of the SAD-BJP and the Congress spoke on the resolution and said that the martyrdom day should be declared a national holiday.
