Policemen surrender in custodial death case

Silchar, Mar 11 (UNI) Three policemen today surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Silchar after more than five months in connection with the alleged custodial death of an undertrial in Kalain police patrol post in Cachar district.

The policemen haD been sent to jail after their surrender.

Official sources said former officer-in-charge (a sub-inspector) of Kalain police station Narayan Tamuli, ASI Promode Ranjan Nath and constable Ramjan Hussain of the outpost surrendered before the court of CJM S Khaund.

The CJM later remanded them to jail custody.

The policemen were accused of beating Motahir Ali, a resident of Brahmangram village, to death in police custody on September 21 last year.

Following the death of the undertrial, thousands of people torched the Kalain police patrol post and a number of police personnel were injured when the irate mob stoned the outpost.
