Major fire averted after crude oil spill-over in Haldia
East Midnapore, Mar 11 (UNI) A major fire was today averted after miscreants pilfered crude oil from an Indian Oil Corporation(IOC) pipeline here in Haldia and abandoned the site last night, allowing gallons of oil to spill out onto the adjacent areas.
The pipeline was coming from Barauni, running between City Centre and Manjusri crossing and the there was a chance of a big fire breaking out on Link Road here.
Incidentally, some of the major oil and gas units and pipelines were located here, including the ones of IOC and Haldia Petrochemicals and Petrocarbons.
Indian Oil Pipeline Divison General Manager Bhaskar Bhattacharya said a gang of miscreants had pilferred a huge amount of crude oil and left the site open allowing crude oil to spill over the surrounding area leaving a chance of a big fire breaking out.
''The situation is now under control,'' he added.
However, the oil authorities have immediately repaired the pipeline, averting chances of a big fire.
BSF and Central Industrial Security force personnel have cordonedoff the road and fire tenders have been rushed to the spot in case of any eventuality.
