Farmer commits suicide over land dispute
Akola, Mar 11 (UNI) A young farmer commited suicide on the premises of Murtizapur tehsil office of this district over a land dispute.
The youth, Devendra Rameshwar Khedkar (29) took the extreme step yesterday afternoon, due to a land dispute with one Meshram family of Jeetapur Khedkar village, where he resided.
The dispute had been going on for many years and Devendra had lost many cases on the matter and did not get any help from the State government, according to the suicide note left behind by Devendra.
Devendra consumed poison in the premises of the tehsil office, following which he was immediately admitted to a general hospital here but he died yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, tension gripped the village following the incident and the villagers surged towards the tehsil office to protest against Devendra's death. However, police were successful in controlling the mob.
Following the post-mortem, Devendra's body was brought to the tehsil office and was sent to the crematorium after a senior police officer assured the villagers that action would be taken against the culprits.
In a five-page suicide note left behind by the deceased, it was mentioned that he had no alternative other than suicide as all the doors of justice were closed for him. He had also urged the District Collector to issue an order of inquiry into the land dispute.
The neighbouring farmer Gangaram Meshram of the Meshram family was arrested in the wee hours today at village Mana, police said.
A case under Section 306 of Indian Penal Code had been registered, they added.
