Court issues summonses for Sanjay-Maanyata

Mumbai, Mar 11 (UNI) A local court today issued summonses for newly married couple, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and his wife Maanyata, asking them to appear before it on April 1.

After hearing arguments of advocate representing Mairaj Sheikh, the former husband of Manayata, Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Shah issued the summonses for Sanjay and Maanyata to appear before the court on April 1 and file their say on the charges levelled against them by Sheikh.

Sheikh, in an application, has challenged Maanyata's marriage to Sanjay Dutt, stating that their divorce never took place.

The claim of Maanyata that they were divorced was not true, he stated in his application.

Sheikh's advocate told the court that Dutt and Maanyata had violated the Muslim Marriage Act, 1939 and as per its resolution, Maanyata cannot marry anybody without prior legal divorce.

He also told the court that the Qazi (religious official), who claimed to have overseen the divorce of Mairaj and Maanyata, was not a reliable person. Some cases of cheating were pending against him in court.

Police yesterday submitted the English translation of Urdu documents submitted by the Qazi in court.

Sheikh, who is currently lodged in Arthur Road jail in an extortion case, has claimed that as per the Muslim Personal Law, Maanyata, whose real name is Dilnawaz Sheikh, continues to be his legal wife and no divorce had taken place between them, as she had claimed quoting a 'Quazi'.

He alleged that Maanyata was pregnant at the time when she claimed to have divorced him and as per the Muslim Personal Law, no divorce can take place when the wife is pregnant.

Sheikh has also claimed that he has a two-and-a-half-year-old son from Maanyata, who now lives with her mother in Hyderabad.
