Tension mounts as CPI(M), BJP clash in Alappuzha

Alappuzha, Mar 10 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the Mararikkulam area in this district when fresh clashes erupted between CPI(M) and BJP activists today.

Stones were pelted at the houses of BJP mandalam president Santhosh, president of a BJP booth committee Sajeev and CPI(M) branch secretary Prabhash, police said.

Police said the CPI(M) activists, who took out a rally to condemn the attack on CPI(M) headquarters in New Delhi, uprooted the BJP's flag posts at Kalavoor in this district yesterday.

The BJP office at Punnapara was attacked allegedly by the CPI(M) activists last evening.

However, a 'hartal' called by the BJP in the area to protest the attack on its office passed off peacefully today.

Security was tightened in the violence-hit areas to prevent any further untoward incident.
