Police step up security following fresh CPM-BJP clashes

Alappuzha, Mar 10 (UNI) Police today tightened security in the Mararikkulam area of this district following fresh clashes between CPM and BJP activists.

Tension prevailed in the area and stones were pelted on the houses of BJP Mandalam president Santhosh, president of a BJP booth committee Sajeev and CPM branch secretary Prabhash, police said.

Tension was simmering between the two groups following a procession by CPM activists to protest against the attack on the CPM headquarters in Delhi by alleged RSS and BJP members yesterday.

CPM workers, who took out a processions across Alappuzha district yesterday, allegedly destroyed the flags and flag posts of the BJP at Kalavoor, north of Alappuzha town.

The BJP office at Punnapra was also attacked last evening, allegedly by CPM activists.

A 'hartal' called by the BJP in the area today against the attack on its office however passed off peacefully. Police patrols were on in tension-prone areas.
