New Delhi, Mar 10 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh Government today approached the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court order granting blanket protection to Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan in the Barabanki land case.

The Mayawati Government in its petition has contended that the High Court cannot stop the authorities from taking appropriate legal action either criminal or civil, if there is evidence against the actor in the case.

Bachchan had gone to the Allahabad High Court against the trial court order holding him guilty of submitting fabricated documents before the authorities to get the land alloted on the grounds that he was a farmer.

He later returned the land to the government and made a statement that he has nothing to do with the land allotment. The land was alloted to Bachchan by the Mulayam Singh goverment.

The High Court while permitting Bachchan to withdraw his petition had also directed that no civil or criminal or revenue proceedings shall be launched against him.

However, the state of UP in its petition has prayed for quashing of the impugned High Court order. According to the state government, the state cannot be prevented from initiating proceeding against Bachchan since he had got the land alloted to him on false documents as well by falsely claiming that he was a farmer.

The petition is likely to come up for hearing next week.
