UN should take care of displaced Lankan Tamils: Nedumaran
Madurai, Mar 9 (UNI) The United Nations should take the responsibility of caring for the displaced Sri Lankan Tamils similar to refugees from Tibet, said to Tamil Nationalist Movement Founder-President P Nedumaran.
Talking to newsmen here last night, Mr Nedumaran alleged Lankan Tamils were forced to flee the Island nation in the wake of armed forces hostilities against them.
As a result, they were restricted to the refugee camps in the Tamil Nadu. However, refugees from Tibet who were under the care of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees continued to enjoy all rights and freedom, he claimed.
Hence, the United Nations should take care of the displaced Sri Lankan Tamils also, he said.
He condemned the alleged high-handedness of Sri Lankan Navy 'which often resorted to unprovoked firing at Tamil Nadu fishermen at mid sea.' Stating the killing of fishermen of Tamil Nadu had been going on since 1983, he claimed over 300 fishermen were killed by the island nation's navy.
He aslo accused the Indian Navy of not taking any steps to protect the lives of Tamil Nadu fishermen.
