Resolution seeks inclusion of Bhutia, Lepcha, Limboo languages
Gangtok, Mar 6 (UNI) The Sikkim Assembly today passed a resolution seeking inclusion of Bhutia, Lepcha and Limboo languages in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Bhutia, Lepcha and Limboo languages are well developed and widely spoken by the three ethnic tribal communities of Sikkim having their own distinct language and literature. The three languages are also taught in the schools and colleges of the state.
'' These languages are rich and recognized officially in the state. Therefore, it will be in the fitness of things to give Bhutia, Lepcha and Limboo languages official recognition at the national level by their inclusion in the 8th schedule,'' said human resource development minister G M Gurung while introducing the resolution in the second day of the budget session at the Assembly.
Gurung's resolution was seconded by MLA C B Karki which was then passed unanimously by the House.
The Sikkim Labour Protection (Amendment) Bill which was introduced yesterday was also passed in today's proceedings.
