Congress leaders begin lobbying for Rajya Sabha elections

Imphal, Mar 6 (UNI) Congress leaders have started a campaign to get ticket for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Manipur.

Elections to Rajya Sabha will be held on March 26.

The Congress has 31 members in the 60 member House and the CPI with four members and RJD with three are supporting it. Hence the Congress has a good chance of winning the lone seat.

Party sources said five persons--Speaker Md Maniruddin Sheikh, former minister Chaltonlien Amo, C Doungel, Congress treasurer S Achoubi and Vice-President AK Mirabai--had so far taken forms from the Congress.

Official sources said notification for the election will be issued on March 8.

According to the poll schedule announced by the Election Commission, the last date for filing nominations is March 15. Scrutiny will take place on March 17 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 19. Polling will be held on March 26 between 0900 hours and 1600 hours.

The term of Mr Rishang Keishing, the RS member from the state, ends on April 9.
