'Maya's ban lift on students' union poll is SP's victory'

Lucknow, Mar 5 (UNI) Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) today termed the restoration of students' union poll as victory against the ruling Mayawati led-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government in Uttar Pradesh.

'' Ms Mayawati has finally bent her knees in front of our demand to lift the ban on the student union poll,'' Senior SP leader and leader of opposition in state Assembly Ahmad Hassan and SP student wing state president Sunil Singh said addressing media here this evening.

The CM had put a ban on the student union election, when she had come to power in May last.

''Since then our party was protesting and demanding its restoration,'' the SP leaders added.

The duo further lambasted Ms Mayawati for interfering her in the students' union poll, saying she had taken into account the recommendations of Lyngdoh committee in this regard, but subject to certain changes in the limit of expenditure to be spent on the polls.

''The BSP government had booked several agitating students, who were demanding the restoration of the election, under fake cases...the SP will continue its protest till the government takes back these cases,'' Mr Hassan warned.

Besides, unemployment allowance and Kanya Vidya Dhan Yojana should be re-initiated, he demanded.

The SP leader also demanded arrest of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Etawah, for shooting at an agitating student.

Meanwhile, UP Higher Education Minister Rakeshdhar Tripathi has welcomed the CM's decision of lifting the ban upon the student union election.
