Haryana extends scholarship scope for SC students

Chandigarh, Mar 5 (UNI) Haryana Government has expanded the scope of Dr Ambedkar Medhavi Chhatra Yojana to give incentive of scholarships to more students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, Welfare of Schedule Castes and Backward Classes Minister Kartar Devi said here today.

The number of scholarships admissible to students belonging to Scheduled Castes has been increased from 2000 to 5000 and 750 students hailing from Backward Classes (Block-B) have also been included under the scheme for the same purpose, she said.

Mrs Kartar Devi said such students studying in polytechnics and Industrial Training Institutes have also been made eligible for scholarship for two years under this scheme.

She said that this scheme was launched with effect from April 1, 2005 for meritorious students of 10 plus two classes. As many as 2000 students belonging to Scheduled Castes and 1000 of Backward Classes (Block-A), who secured 60 per cent or more marks in Class X were eligible to get scholarships at a rate of Rs 1000 per month for TEN months in 10 plus one. The scheme also aimed at renewing the scholarships to these students in 10 plus two.

Mrs Kartar Devi said the government has also enhanced the rates of one-time incentive being given to meritorious students of Scheduled Castes securing first division in 10 plus two or diploma courses, graduate and post-graduate classes, graduate and post-graduate technical courses or professional courses.

She said these rates have been enhanced from Rs 1000 to Rs 3000, from Rs 1500 to Rs 4500 and from Rs 3000 to Rs 6000 respectively.

sHe said the Department of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes has implemented a number of schemes for educational and socio-economic uplift of members belonging to Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes.

She said the rate of incentive being given to Panchayats for their outstanding works for the welfare of Scheduled Castes has also been increased ten times thus raising it from Rs 5000 to Rs 50,000.
