Gag order against Thackeray should continue: Medha Patkar
Mumbai, Mar 4 (UNI) National Alliance of Peoples Movement leader Medha Patkar today said the ''gag order'' against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray should continue until the situation in the state completely returned to normal.
Speaking to mediapersons, Ms Patkar said the situation in the state has still not returned to normal and, so, the gag order should continue.
Ms Patkar has filed a petition against Mr Thackeray before the Human Rights Commission whose member Shritija Vyas today heard the petition and asked the State Government to place a comprehensive report before the Commission. The matter has been adjourned for further hearing till March 25.
Ms Patkar regretted that Bollywood actor Nana Patekar had extended support to Mr Thackeray. She pointed out that the Constitution allows the citizens to practice or carry on any occupation, trade or business in any part of the country.
Former police officer and advocate Y P Singh, who is representing Ms Patkar, said the state government could have avoided the loss of lives and damage to property had preventive measures been taken.
He said the state government must take action under Section 217 of the IPC against the Director General of Police and Mumbai Police Commissioner, who allegedly indulged in a criminal ommission by not taking stern action against Mr Thackeray.
