Devadasis' or God' wives inspire Bollywood

New Delhi, Mar 03, 2008: A centuries-old custom that saw girls being led into a life of prostitution and slavery in the name of serving Hindu gods has become the focus of a new Bollywood film.

Titled 'Pranali', the film delves into the murky truth behind the popular practice of dedicating young girls to the service of a deity in ancient India, the custom that over time turned into an excuse for their sexual exploitation by powerful men.
