NDMA to inspect permanent shelter sites in tsunami-hit Andaman

Port Blair, Mar 3 (UNI) A National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) team arrived here today to take stock of the construction work in the tsunami-hit areas of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The team, which is on a two-day visit to the area, headed by its Vice-Chairman General(Retd) N C Vij and accompanied by an inter-ministerial team, visited the permanent shelter construction site at Hutbay and Bamboo flat islands of Andaman district.

General Vij and his team would visit the worst-tsunami hit Campbell Bay Islands tomorrow, where they are scheduled to visit the permanent shelter construction, break water, jetty and seawall, construction site of North-South road.

''The team is also scheduled to visit the permanent shelter site at Kinyuka village of Car Nicobar Islands and other nearby islands like Chowra, Teressa and Katchal, which were completely ravaged by the tsunami in 2004,'' top officials of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration said.

Later in the evening, the team will hold a meeting with the Lt Governor and other senior officers of the administration.
