Cong workers assault rival supporters in CM's constituency

Shillong, Mar 2 (UNI) Nine United Democratic Party(UDP) supporters have allegedly been beaten up by Congress workers in incumbent Chief Minister D D Lapang's constituency in Meghalaya.

Police said the incident occurred last night when a group of Congress workers allegedly blocked the road at Quinine village in Ri-Bhoi district and ''assaulted'' nine UDP workers, who were returning from Umtasor village after distributing electoral rolls to their polling agents.

Police said the Congress workers also damaged two vehicles belonging to the UDP supporters.

Chief Minister D D Lapang, who is seeking re-election from Nongpoh on a Congress ticket, is facing a tough electoral battle from UDP's candidate Celestine Lyngdoh.

Meanwhile, the UDP supporters have filed an FIR against two Youth Congress leaders Dipul Rynthathiang and Dipshon Rynthathiang for their alleged involvement in last night incidents.

Police have registered a case in this connection.
