US to monitor election process in Nepal

Kathmandu, Mar 1: The US government is all set to assist Nepal in its election to the Constituent Assembly to be held on April 10, state run media reported here today. "The US government would establish an Operation Centre at the Election Commission which would monitor the electoral procedures", state run media, The Rising Nepal was quoted as saying.

Secretary at the Commission, Sushil Jung Rana and US Ambassador to Nepal, Nancy J Powell signed a letter of understanding at the Commission yesterday. '' The assistance is aimed at successful accomplishment of the election,'' Ambassador Powell said. Meanwhile, hailing the agreement reached between the Nepal government and the United Democratic Madhesi Front on Thursday Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokharel said, it would create more conducive environment for the election and made it more certain.

He said the date for the registration of nominations had also been extended so as to include all parties in the election. Mr Bhoj also expressed his hope that this measure would help in strenthening the peace process.

Nepal is holding Constituent Assembly election for the first time on April 10 to write a new Constitution and decide the fate of 240 year old monarchy which has been suspended in the new interim constitution.
