Mother throws baby in pond, commits suicide

Kendrapada, Feb 29 (UNI) In a shocking incident, the mother of a 10-month-old girl committed suicide after throwing the baby into a pond.

Thirty-year-old Pratima Nayak, a resident of Gandakula village under Pattamundai police station in Kendrapara district, committed suicide yesterday along with her daughter.

Family members of the deceased woman alleged that Pratima's husband Abhaya Nayak used to torture her mentally and physically laying the blame on her for giving birth to three daughters.

The Pattamundai police, on being informed about the incident from local people, rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies from the pond.

The bodies have been sent for autopsies and a case has been registered in the Pattamundai police station.

The local villagers had urged the district administration and law enforcement agencies to register a criminal case against Abhaya, who allegedly forced his wife to commit suicide.
