Cop injured as service rifle 'goes off'

Madurai, Feb 29 (UNI) A police constable was critically injured, when his service rifle went off 'accidentally' and a bullet pierled his chest here this afternoon.

Police sources said Muthupandi (45), attached to the Pudur Police Station, was on duty at a police check post on the Pudur-Azhagarkoil road, when his .303 service rifle went off.

He was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), where his condition was stated to be critical.

It was not immediately known whether it was a 'suicide attempt' or just accidental. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and held inquiries.
