Punjab constitutes committee to increase milk production

Chandigarh, Feb 28 (UNI) Punjab Cooperation Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh today constituted a 15-member high level committee to chalk out a special action plan to increase milk production in the state.

Capt Singh was addressing a press conference here after presiding over a workshop on ''Organisation Building and Cooperative Development'' organised by Milkfed in collaboration with National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

''The Cooperation Department has embarked upon an ambitious plan to strengthen the dairy sector which is far better and remunerative than traditional Wheat-Paddy rotation to bail out the farming community which is reeling under a huge debt, '' Capt Singh said.

He said that the proposed committee would suggest ways and means for strengthening the managing capacity and efficiency of Milkfed management besides making the milk plants more viable by running them on full capacity.

He informed that the committee would also make detailed recommendations for providing total health care for the milched animals of the members of the cooperative societies and motivating more and more farmers to opt for dairy farming. Besides this, the committee would also chalk out the new marketing policy for Milkfed which includes increase in milk production, more remunerative prices to dairy farmers, appropriate processing and more professional marketing in national as well as international market.
