Darjeeling MP urges Centre not to bring Darjeeling in sixth schedu
New Delhi, Feb 28 (UNI) Member of Parliament from Darjeeling T Nargula today requested the Centre not to bring Darjeeling under the sixth schedule as the hill people were totally against it.
Mr Nargula, in a letter to the Home Minister Shiv Raj Patil, has pointed out that the situation in the hills was grave as more than 300 people were on fast unto death at different places of the hills against the introduction of Sixth Schedule Bill in the Parliament.
There was firing at Panighata and several persons were injured, he said. The Home Minister was aware of the present situation in Darjeeling where only one per cent of the hill people will be happy with this Sixth Schedule Bill.
He said that despite being the local MP from Darjeeling he did not know about the contents of the Sixth Schedule. Considering the sentiments of the entire hill people this bill should not be introduced in the Parliament, otherwise the entire region will be on fire. Before anything untoward happens the Central government should take the initiative to withdraw the Sixth Schedule Bill, which will bring peace to the hills of Darjeeling, he said.
