Highway traffic blocked due to stir

Imphal, Feb 26 (UNI) Passenger bus services under the aegis of the Indo-Burma Joint Transporters' Union started a stir today to protest against the alleged high-handedness of police commandos and the monetary demands made by them.

The Joint Action Commission of the Imphal to Jiribam Tata Sumo Taxi Services has also started blocking National Highway-53 indefinitely from today to protest monetary demands by suspected militants.

Due to the stir the Imphal Jiribam highway was deserted today.

Convenor of Indo-Burma Joint Transporter Union N Priyokumar said passenger buses plying to Thoubal, Kakching, Chandel, Sugnu and Chakpikarong at Thoubal and Chandel districts were also stopped to protest the extortion demands.

The transporters are also planning to stage a sit in protest at Imphal tomorrow.
