Commonwealth chief lauds peaceful conduct of Pak polls

Islamabad, Feb.23 : Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon has praised the Election Commission (EC) of Pakistan for conducting fair and peaceful elections on February 18.

According to the Daily Times, the message, to EC Secretary Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad, said, "These elections were an important step in Pakistan's journey towards full democracy. The people of Pakistan have spoken and their voice must be heard and respected."

McKinnon also expressed the hope that the democratic process would now fully play its role with the formation of a new constitutional government.

Pakistan was suspended from the 53-member grouping of nations after the imposition of emergency on November 3 last year.
