Rupee opens firm at 40.04 per USD

Mumbai, Feb 21: The rupee today resumed firm at 40.04/05 per USD against 40.20/22 on the previous day's close on lack of fresh dollar demand from local bankers, dealers said.

Rupee rose sharply on Thursday, tracking gains in local shares that were given a fillip from buoyant Asian equities, but record oil prices and a shortage of dollars in the system were expected to limit gains. Later, rupee fluctuated at a range from 40.04/05 to 40.20 per dollar, rising smartly from a close of 40.22/22 on Wednesday, dealers added.
