Railways' freight revenue up 12.34 per cent
New Delhi, Feb 19 (UNI) The Railways generated Rs 38292.04 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the first ten months of the current fiscal as compared to Rs 34087.14 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 12.34 per cent.
The Railways carried 643.70 million tonnes of freight traffic during the period (April 2007-January 2008) as compared to 593.67 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year, reflecting an increase of 8.43 per cent.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up to 415432 million tonnes compared to 389211 million tonnes during April 2006-January 2007, marking an increase of 6.74 per cent.
The earnings from freight traffic during January this year were Rs 4534.15 crore compared to Rs 3844.30 crore during the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 17.94 per cent.
The Railways carried 72.35 million tonnes of freight traffic during January this year as compared to 65.74 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 10.05 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 42,950 million during January 2007 compared to 47829 million during the same month this year, showing an increase of 11.36 per cent.
Of the total earnings January this year, Rs 1681.31 crore came from transportation of 30.65 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs.
745.28 crore from 12.26 million tonnes of iron ore, Rs 377.56 crore from 3.99 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 375.47 crore from 7.24 million tonnes of cement, Rs 249.41 crore from 2.39 million tonnes of iron and finished steel and Rs 254.94 crore from 3.06 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL).
In addition, the Railways earned Rs 214.35 crore from transportation of 3.24 million tonnes of fertilisers, Rs 182.17 crore from 2.45 million tones of container service, Rs 74.70 crore from 1.07 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants, except iron ore, and Rs 378.96 crore from 6.00 million tonnes of other goods.
