Monserrate, wife and Panaji Mayor Tony arrested

Panaji, Feb 19 (UNI) Taleigao legislator Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate, his wife and North Goa Zilla Parishad member Jennifer and city Mayor Tony Rodrigues were taken into custody late tonight for allegedly inciting violence in front of the Panjim police station, where they had staged a 'dharna' (sit-in) demanding suspension of an Inspector for encouraging goons.

Ms Jennifer, who entered into an argument with police after violence broke out was first taken into custody, followed by the other two.

The situation in the city is under control, though tense, with the police intensifying patrolling and keeping strict vigil at vulnerable places in view of the alleged violence against the cops.
