Srinagar-Uri road closed by people in Baramulla

Baramulla, Feb 18 (UNI) Traffic on Srinagar-Uri highway remained disrupted for several hours this afternoon, when people at Kanispora took to streets in protest against death of a Power Development Department (PDD) daily wager after falling from an electric pole.

Shouting slogans against the PDD and district authorities, the demonstrators blocked the main highway and did not allow any vehicle to pass at Kanispora.

They said a daily wager fell down from an electric pole at Amargrah, Sopore, in this district. He died before he could be shifted to hospital.

The agitators alleged that daily wagers are being given risky job by the PDD, when trained permanent employees watch from a distance.

They said more than a dozen daily wagers have lost their lives in the Kashmir valley during the past few months after their fall from electric poles during repair works.

Demanding full compensation to the next of kin of the deceased daily wager, the agitators said the government should take action against the senior officers of the PDD for risking the lives of such daily wagers.
