Meghalaya Polls: EC adjourns elections in Baghmara const
Shillong, Fe 16 (UNI) The election to the Baghmara Assembly constituency has been officially adjourned following the sudden demise of sitting Congress MLA and candidate Sengran M Sangma today, an election official said.
Mr Sangma passed away at a local hospital in Baghmara of South Garo Hills district after a prolonged illness.
''We have adjourned the Assembly elections in Baghmara after the sudden demise of Mr Sangma,'' Chief Electoral Officer P Naik told UNI here.
Mr Naik, however, said the Election Commission was yet to fix the date for holding the elections.
Meghalaya goes to polls on March 3.
Mr Sangma was first elected in the 2003 Assembly election, defeating Lotsing A Sangma of the Nationalist Congress Party.
He was sworn in as a Minister of State in-charge of Printing and Stationery and Fisheries in the Lapang and Rymbai-led ministry.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee have expressed shock over the sudden demise of Mr Sangma. The MPCC President has sent his condolences to the bereaved families.
