Remand prisoner dies of heart ailment

Chennai, Feb 15 (UNI) A remand prisoner, who was suffering from a heart ailment, died here today while being shifted to a hospital.

Police sources said the prisoner Nathalingam (42) was lodged in Puzhal Central prison after he was sent for judicial remand on February 12. He was arrested in connection with an illicit arrack case by the Choonambedu police in adjoining Kancheepuram district.

Nathalingam, a chronic heart patient, complained of uneasiness and was rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital, but he died enroute.

However, his relatives alleged that he had died of police torture and staged an agitation in front of the hospital.
