CDA launches alternative livelihood for fishermen

Bhubaneswar, Feb 14 (UNI) In a bid to reduce the pressure of fishing on Chilika lagoon,an alternative livelihood option for the farmers was launched in close association of the Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA).

Chilka Development Authority(CDA) Chief Executive S K Panda said a village level workshop was recently organised in the remote village of Gorangpatna situated in the shoreline of Chilika lagoon to create alternate livelihood options for the poor fishermen.

Gourangpatna is one of the four villages in Chilika lagoon where the pilot village projects for alternative income generating activities would be implemented with the help from JICA.

Mr Panda said the alternate income generating livelihood options will help the local fishermen to sustain their livelihood and help in reducing the fishing pressure in Chilika lagoon.

He said four villages namely Gourangpatna, Bhusandpur, Mahisa and Alindapatna have been selected where the pilot project would be executed by the villagers in association with local NGOs and self-help groups.
