Outsiders to be strictly monitored in Chennai

Chennai, Feb 13 (UNI) The police will monitor the movement of people from other States in the city to check any possible crime, police Commissioner Nanchil Kumaran said today.

''If someone comes here to settle down, he will be monitored. All the police stations have been instructed to give information about outsiders. Even foreign tourists will also be monitored,'' he told newspersons here.

Mr Kumaran pointed out that many foreign companies, which opened offices here, recruited a lot of people from other States. Besides, people coming from other States, especially Bihar and Jharkhand, for construction work, have recently indulged in many crimes.

The Commissioner claimed that the crime rate in the city had come down when compared to last year's figures. In the last two months, due to active monitoring, the police have solved 124 cases and arrested 148 criminals involved in various crimes.

''More than Rs one crore worth of gold and silver ornaments were recovered from them,'' he said, adding that over Rs three crore worth CDs and computers, used for video piracy, were also recovered.
