London, Feb.13 : The Gordon Brown Government has admitted in a report that one in five kids in Britain are beneficiaries of state benefits.

According to The Telegraph, over 2.2 million British children live in households dependent on state benefits. Most of these households are located in Manchester, Liverpool, London and Glasgow.

The new figures is likely to embarrass Gordon Brown because his New Labour Party has made eliminating child poverty a key manifesto pledge.

Britain now has Europe's highest proportion of children in workless households.

The figures came just a week after ministers were condemned by a parliamentary committee for creating an army of households where "benefits are a way of life".

The benefits system for the workless households cost the Exchequer over 12 billion pounds a year, the paper reported.
