DMDK Councillor nabbed in cheating case

Pudukkottai, Feb 12: Police have arrested a Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) councillor here yesterday in connection with a cheating case.

Alangudi town panchayat union member Krishnamurthy (28) was taken into custody when he emerged out of the council meeting. With this, the number of persons arrested in connection with the case had increased to four. Earlier, the three constables were arrested.

Police said a nine-member group, including money lender Pannerselvam, Krishnamurthy and three constables, had allegedly duped Ramesh of Ponneri, near Chennai, who had come to Alangudi in December last to avail a loan from Pannerselvam. Ramesh had reportedly paid some commission to Krishnamurthy as demanded by him for forwarding the loan.

Meanwhile, Panneerselvam informed the constables -- N Neelamegam (44), R Kudiminathan (40) and M Gopal (46) -- of Ramesh's possession of the money, following which the cops confronted him and accused him of possessing black money.

Ramesh preferred a complaint with SP Kapil Kumar Saratkar, who, in turn, constituted a special team to nab the culprits, police said.
